Clods Wallup (download from the App Store and Google Play Store) doesn’t just have the best name we’ve heard in a while, it’s also got some of the most interesting gameplay mechanics. It’s smart, it’s riddled with charm and it’s just challenging enough to keep you interested for the long haul.

The game sees you trying to guide Clods – podgy little critters with big grins and tiny legs – into portals. Different Clods will only move on certain types of land, which means you need to build them comfortable paths to get from A to B.

You build those paths by sliding hexagonal blocks around. You can move them horizontally, vertically or diagonally, but the blocks move in rows, so shifting one is going to move the whole stack.

It’s a simple enough idea, and the game doesn’t have move limits so you can experiment however you’d like. That doesn’t mean there aren’t rewards for completing levels with the fewest possible moves, and that adds a chunk of replayability to the experience.

There are also monsters blocking your way – the titular Wallups. They’ve snaffle your Clods if they get too close, but have their own movement preferences. As you progress through the game you’ll need to figure out how to get past them.

None of the levels are going to take you more than a handful of minutes to complete, but they’re going to have you scratching your head in all the right ways. Clods Wallup if filled with little moments of success, and while it’s never super challenging, you always feel good when you complete a challenge.

Clods Wallup is a bright and breezy game that’s going to leave you with a smile on your face. It’s well-written, well-designed and there’s enough fun here to keep you playing for a good few hours.
