Bucking the Trend: Why Supermagical went from freemium to premium
Hi there! Let me introduce ourselves: we are Super Awesome Hyper Dimensional Mega Team, aka most likely the game developers with the longest name in the industry. And as I've been led to believe by my mom, also the coolest. We are the makers of Pro Zombie Soccer (Editor's Choice and Best of 2010 on the App Store) and last year's Supermagical (Editor's Choice and Best of 2012 on the App Store).Following our publisher's advice (and also the current trend), we released Supermagical as a free-to-play game. We struggled from day one to hit the right key with our players when it came to finding a satisfactory percentage of paying users. We weren't even close. The reasons? We believe there are several;Ready your dice bag: Quarriors is coming to iPad
By Jim Squires
If you're a fan of tabletop gaming, chances are good that you've been in love with deck-building games since they first hit the scene a few years ago. From Dominion to Ascension and everything in between, deck-building has proven to be a winning formula time and time again. 2011's Quarriors manages to stand-out from the crowd, not just because of its gameplay, but also because of its weight.Trading the card-based nature of most deck-builders for 130 custom dice, Quarriors was as unique as it was fun. If you're looking for a lighter alternative to all of those dice, though, WizKids/NECA have announced that their bringing the Quarriors brand to the iPad with a faithful translation of the original release. We asked our friends (and the tabletop experts) at Perpetual Geek Machine why we should be excited about this upcoming iPad adaptation. Having looked at the Quarriors brand in the past, we figured they'd be the right brains to pick. The 7th Guest: 3 is now in development
By Joe Jasko
Trilobyte Games has shown us today that it's never too late to make a new installment of your favorite video game series, even if it takes two whole decades to do it. The 7th Guest was an adventure game first released in 1993, with a follow-up sequel called The 11th Hour hitting shelves in the fall of 1995. And now today, as we come to the close of 2013, the developer has announced that a final episode in the franchise is currently in the works, to be known simply as The 7th Guest: 3.Just so you have an idea of how long it's really been, the original The 7th Guest was first released as a means to push hardware sales of computers with this newfangled technology called CD-ROM drives. Well now The 7th Guest: 3, or T7G3 for short, is said to mark a long-awaited return to the puzzle-filled house of notorious villain Henry Stauf, in which the house itself acts as one enormous puzzle to put the player's mind to the ultimate test."While the folks at Trilobyte Games plan to closely follow the spirit and charm of the first two entries in the series here in this upcoming third installment, that's certainly not to say that they won't be taking advantage of some of the latest technological advances that have occurred since 1995: such as touchscreen controls and rendering Stauf's mansion in glorious high-definition graphics. As Trilobyte Games CEO Rob Landeros puts it, "We've been waiting to make The 7th Guest: 3 for a long time."Read a classic novel while playing an endless runner game in the insanely clever Stride & Prejudice
By Joe Jasko
I've always been a big advocate of multitasking, and now with all the latest advents in mobile technology, game developers have been putting together all sorts of wildly different ideas that we never would have thought were possible before, let alone so totally awesome and fun. For instance, have you ever wanted to read an entire novel while playing an endless runner game?Well now you may very well have the chance, as the incredibly unique Stride & Prejudice from No Crusts Interactive aims to blend classic literature with the core gameplay mechanics of endless runner mobile games to offer a quirky hodgepodge experience that's quite unlike anything we've seen before."In short, Stride & Prejudice puts players in the role of a pixelated Lizzy Bennet, as she literally runs and jumps along lines of text that make up the entirety of Jane Austen's classic novel, Pride and Prejudice. That's right: you'll be able to read the entire book as you play through the game. A few nifty features have also been added into Stride & Prejudice to make for the optimal reading experience, such as a Reader Mode which lets you pick up right where you left off reading so you can pace yourself accordingly while still being able to finish the whole book.A Deal Fit for a Jedi: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast + Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy for $6.99

By Joe Jasko
Hunting for hidden objects in a dusty and elaborate manor has become a pastime that's as old as all of space and time. But now that we've had our fair share of searching through the creepiest and most mysterious of mansions, it was only a matter of time before we set our sights on a different location: an enigmatic hotel. To this end, Game Insight has just announced a brand new hidden object adventure called Hotel Enigma, in which players will not only be searching for objects around some rich and photorealistic hotel settings, but also taking a step into some completely alternate dimensions along the way as well!Coming to us from the same team behind the fantastic Mystery Manor and Mirrors of Albion, the upcoming Hotel Enigma is gearing up to bring hidden object gamers another whimsical adventure that's brimming with intrigue and dozens of puzzles. The game initially takes place in a quiet inn along the idyllic Ireland hillsides, before events escalate and expand into multiple dimensions (I just knew those weirdos living above me were from a different world!). And the only thing more enthralling than the hidden object gameplay is the captivating storyline full of strange and exciting hotel guests and other characters.Players themselves will actually be able to travel between these different dimensions by means of a magical suitcase, as they try and track down a mysterious stranger who went missing from the hotel shortly before their arrival. Much like other Game Insight hidden object adventures, Hotel Enigma will feature countless colorful hidden object scenes, as players can craft special tool items to help speed up their progress towards completing sets of rare artifact collectables.Game Insight's Hotel Enigma will be released on iPad and Facebook sometime before the year is up: just make sure you check your luggage at the door, because you wouldn't want your things being taken to another dimension, now would you? This Week in China: Real Hearthstone and Fake Hearthstone
