Despite Apple’s ban on incentivized installs, Tapjoy now in 10,000 apps
By Jim Squires
When Apple dropped the hammer on incentivized installs back in April, most folks had believed that would sound the death knell for then-thriving companies built around the pay-per-install business model. Instead it forced them to get creative. Take Tapjoy for instance. Back in June, they launched a $5 million fund to help iOS developers make the jump to Android - a platform where incentivized installs are still fair game. Now, only two months later, they've announced new partnerships that bring the total number of apps using their monetization services to more than 10,000.12 new “With Friends” trademark applications filed, but not by Zynga
By Jim Squires
Combining asynchronous multiplayer with classic gaming formulas is quickly becoming big business, and Zynga knows it. That's why they acquired Newtoy, the developer behind such hits as Words With Friends, Chess With Friends, and Hanging With Friends. In fact, Zynga thinks it could be such big business that they're trying to trademark the term "With Friends" to protect their branding. And it looks like they're doing so with good reason - Fusible.com is reporting that inXile Entertainment's CEO Brian Fargo may be trying to trademark 12 different "With Friends" games of his own.Google buys Motorola Mobility: Could Android become an in-house exclusive?

When we talk acquisitions in the mobile space here at Gamezebo, we're usually wowed by a number like $104 million (what GREE paid for OpenFeint) or $400 million (the price paid for ngmoco last fall). But how about $12.5 billion? That's how much Google is paying to buy Motorola Mobility - and despite being 63% above stock price, I say it's going to be worth every penny. Here's why.CrowdStar takes It Girl to Russia
Social game developer CrowdStar has announced that, after achieving success on platforms like Facebook and the iPhone, it will now be expanding to Russia with the release of its top-grossing game It Girl.Star Legends: The Blackstar Chronicles now available as free beta on Android Market
By Jim Squires
When we first reported on Star Legends: The Blackstar Chronicles back in March, it was then going by the much easier to type title of Blackstar. New moniker asides, we're delighted to report that Star Legends seems to be moving from production phase to deployment, as the game has recently become available on Android - though admittedly in beta form.Hot Summer in the City: 2011 Casual Game Outlook
By Robin Boyar
As most of the United States struggles with record heat waves, the summer of 2011 may also be recorded as one of the hottest in the brief history of casual games. As the mercury continues to reach its highest heights, so are the valuations on casual games companies—witness Zygna's upcoming $1 billion IPO and EA's $750 million+ purchase of PopCap. Yet, Nintendo's staggering loss of approximately $300 million in Q1 shows a marketplace struggling with balance. Overheated, interglacial or ice age? Where is casual gaming going? An examination of key indicators provides some insights to this changing climate. Is Storm8 worth $1 billion?
By Jim Squires
While they might not be the household name that Zynga is, Storm8 is a company that's made some serious waves in social gaming. In terms of mobile social games, their TeamLava brand of games (City Story, Restaurant Story, Zoo Story, et al) frequently pop up on lists of top grossing apps. Their own Storm8 branded games like World War and iMobsters aren't exactly slouches either. In fact, back in June the company announced its first million dollar day. But could they really be worth a billion dollars?Does Facebook favor Zynga?
By Joel Brodie
A famous quote from George Orwell's Animal Farm is, "all animals are equal, but some are more equal then others." Based on Dean Takahashi's excellent article in VentureBeat, this is how game developers perceive the relationship between Facebook and Zynga. Whether a special partnership exists or not, according to Takahashi, the mere fact that rumors are swirling will have a huge impact on social gaming in the year to come --- for Zynga, Facebook, and if they play their cards right, Google.
