3 Industry Lessons from GDC 2012
By Eli Cymet
Last week, Josh and I were lucky enough to attend this year's Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco. Held at the Moscone Center in the heart of downtown, GDC is the world's largest professionally-focused video game event - and a hell of a good time. Besides some excellent networking, and some post-"networking" hangovers, the week gave us a first-hand look at some ways the game industry continues to change. So from two first time GDC-ers to you, here are three industry lessons you need to know for 2012.Zynga plans second stock offering to protect share prices
Some complex financial news this morning as we have just learned that Zynga will be pursuing a secondary stock offering in the hopes of raising $400 million. However, and here's where things get tricky, only a specific class of stocks are going to be sold and the driving purpose behind the move is not to raise money for the company, but rather to force those already holding stock to hang onto it for a longer term.King.com getting into mobile with Fabrication Games acquisition
News has just broken that Facebook power-player King.com has acquired mobile developer Fabrication Games in an effort to establish a presence on iOS and Android devices. Don't feel bad if you don't recognize the Fabrication name, they're a smaller studio (only 12 employees) based in Sweden. The company has published a few smaller-scale games such as Bugfest and The Game Trail, but are still looking for their first big App Store hit.Planning a Family Video Game Night
Among today's most exciting and cutting-edge forms of entertainment, video games are a great way to connect with kids, and make lasting memories, while experiencing a positive activity that the whole family can enjoy. The best way to begin: Start planning your own family game night.Post-GDC: The games we can’t wait to play
The annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco hit the industry like a storm last week, leaving hundreds of new game announcements, opinions, and breaking news stories in its wake. And those new game announcements? Some of them were real doozies. In fact some of these upcoming games look so good that it's hard to not forget we're game industry professionals for a moment as we just get giddy at the thought of playing them. What games inspired these influential game designers?
By Joel Brodie
Almost every notable film director praises classics like Citizen Kane as inspiration for the movies they create today. But what past games inspired the Martin Scorseses of the games industry? That was the question posed during the GDC session "Forgotten Tales Remembered" where Sid Meier, Will Wright, Cliff Bleszinski, and John Romero recounted the games that influenced them the most. The answers were both surprising and illuminating. This week in gaming news: March 9, 2012

GDC 2012 has come and gone. We're reminded, once again, of what a weird and wonderful industry we work in. The App Store now boasts over 25 billion served, Google gave the Android Market a name change, people buzzed about Valve making a game console, and Valve said "No we're not." Finally, if you return to World of Warcraft, Blizzard will give you a flying animal. Think about it!Google pressuring Android developers to use “Google Wallet?”

According to a report from Reuters, Google Inc. may be pressuring Android game and app developers to adopt an in-house payment system in the place of third-party alternatives like PayPal, Boku, and Zong.
