Feast your eyes on 166 game prototypes for the OUYA
Kill Screen and the folks behind the OUYA recently teamed up to host a 10-day game jam which challenged developers from all over the world to create game prototypes for the OUYA. The result was a whopping 166 entries, all of which can be checked out here.
Ngmoco putting We Rule, Touch Pets Dogs 2, Touch Pets Cats, and GodFinger All-Stars out to pasture
You can file this story under Bummer Ways to Start the Week. Ngmoco is shutting down We Rule, GodFinger All-Stars, Touch Pets Cats, and Touch Pets Dogs 2 on March 31st. Pretty crazy, no? And to make matters worse, the games will be delisted from Google Play as well as the App Store on February 1st - AKA four days from now.
Mobility Unleashed contest searches for the Best Indie Game Developer
Calling all U.S. mobile game developers! Mobility Unleashed wants to find the absolute best developer of indie games right now on the market. Sponsored by Qualcomm and YetiZen, this exciting contest calls for all interested games studios to submit their best and "snappiest" game for consideration in what will undoubtedly become an important and high accolade to slap on your latest indie gem. There will be two selected winners in the contest: one for Android, and one for Windows. However, it should be noted that all games are expected to be of the highest console quality if they stand a chance at winning.

It wasn't so long ago that smartphone/tablet games were considered a passing phase - not to mention inferior to games on dedicated mobile gaming platforms (which is a shame because that version of Snake on old Nokia phones was awesome). But things have changed a lot since then, and in fact smartphone/tablet games have popped up in the "Best Mobile/Handheld Game" category of the Game Developer's Choice Awards four years in a row now. This year, it's The Room and Hero Academy.

The universe is a strange, unpredictable place. I could list a billion reasons for this, but I'll focus instead on one of the major ones: everyone, everywhere is playing a massive game of Scrabble. You're probably as surprised as I was when I first found out, and I'm sure you have tons of questions. I can't help with that, but what I can do is tell you how well President Obama performed on this eternal Scrabble board during his second inauguration speech. With his frequent usage of ten dollar words like "liberty" and "equal," he scored a total of 238 points.
Temple Run 2 dashes on over to Android
Say, Android owners, do you happen to hear that crazy pounding noise? Don't look now, but I'm pretty sure it's the sound of a giant, angry monkey busting down your door to tell you that Temple Run 2 is now available for select Android and Kindle devices. Good luck explaining that one to the family!

Wii U’s Miiverse social network coming to smartphones this spring
The question of whether or not Nintendo will develop games for iOS or Android remains as unresolved as ever, but they announced earlier this morning they'll be bringing the Wii U-based Miiverse social network to smartphones this spring. And in what is likely an attempt to stoke the flames of rivalry between Android and iOS owners, they didn't specify which operating systems it will launch on. Well played, Nintendo.
