Left in the Dark: No One on Board Review
While on a recent trip to Belarus, I was struck by the need for a McDonald's cheeseburger. Days of strange foods made me crave something predictable and familiar. It occurred to me then that games are like food; sometimes we look for something new on the menu, and sometimes we want the assurance of the tried-and-true. Moonrise Interactive's Left in the Dark: No One on Board fits into the latter category—not remarkable by any stretch, but as an interactive experience, solid and familiar.LEGO: Legends of CHIMA Online Review
By Nick Tylwalk
Before we get into this, let's first pour out some adult beverages for the late LEGO Universe, a game that was beloved by my kids but apparently didn't attract enough paying players - including my kids. LEGO: Legends of Chima Online represents a second try at getting the no-brainer concept of a LEGO MMO right, and while it's not as imaginative as its predecessor, it's largely successful overall.Teacher Story Review
By Nadia Oxford
In the punishing world of academia, even top students can lose momentum and begin to slack off. And though it may break the professor's heart, he or she will have to break out the red pen and penalize the student's work accordingly. Similarly, it's painful to award Teacher Story with anything less than an A. This web-based strategy game provides a unique experience and wads of hilarious writing, but the mandatory long, long waits in between play sessions bung up the game's final mark.Race the Sun Review
By Andy Chalk
Race the Sun is a 3D endless racer that's as simple as it is cool: a high-intensity time trial through a life-or-death obstacle course that's easy to play, wickedly challenging, and devilishly addictive. The game puts you at the helm of an extremely fast solar-powered ship that, although it looks like it could fly, actually just skims across the surface of a strange alien world in a never-ending race against the setting sun.Echoes of the Past: The Kingdom of Despair Review
By Joe Jasko
Echoes of the Past: The Kingdom of Despair is the latest entry in an HOG adventure series whose name emphasizes its many subtle failures: mainly because it feels like we've already been there a handful of times before in the past. At the start of the game, your unnamed character is randomly browsing a bookstore one day, after being intrigued by a magic spell book that is said to be held within. Not even a minute after you get there, a young woman enters the bookstore, activates the spell book, turns into an evil witch, and transports you to her evil lair, where you'll passively try to escape and go home.Papers, Please Review
Papers, Please is a strange beast. On the surface, it seems most comparable to Cart Life: both games revolve around mundane and repetitive jobs that barely allow their protagonists to make ends meet. But while Cart Life utilizes sympathetic gameplay that reflects the tedium and uncertainty of living through each day in the life, Papers, Please creates a surprisingly fun time management experience for any player able to shuffle through the nightly routine of watching your virtual family slowly starve to death.DuckTales Remastered Review
By Mike Rose
DuckTales Remastered should be the greatest thing since sliced bread. An HD remake of one of the most loved NES games ever, put together by WayForward, one of the most exciting developers of the here and now? Why yes, I would like to grab a copy of that, thank you very much.Guacamelee! Review
By Mike Rose
In terms of getting me excited about a game, the phrase "A Metroidvania style action-platformer set in a magical Mexican inspired world" is always going to do the job. I do love my Metroid-style games, and enjoy exploring the twists that modern titles put on the original formula. Guacamelee is the most Metroid-like game I've played in quite some time - sure, it has its own little neat ideas packed in, but for the most part, it's heavily inspired by the Nintendo classic. That's far from a bad thing, mind you, as there's so much style and finesse lavished across this adventure.
