Post-GDC: The games we can’t wait to play
The annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco hit the industry like a storm last week, leaving hundreds of new game announcements, opinions, and breaking news stories in its wake. And those new game announcements? Some of them were real doozies. In fact some of these upcoming games look so good that it's hard to not forget we're game industry professionals for a moment as we just get giddy at the thought of playing them.Onimusha Soul coming to browsers in June

Capcom's Onimusha series hasn't seen much love since the 2006 release of Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams for the PlayStation 2. That's all set to change in a big, social way. Capcom recently announced that Onimusha Soul, the company's first-ever browser-based game, is coming in June. What games inspired these influential game designers?

Almost every notable film director praises classics like Citizen Kane as inspiration for the movies they create today. But what past games inspired the Martin Scorseses of the games industry? That was the question posed during the GDC session "Forgotten Tales Remembered" where Sid Meier, Will Wright, Cliff Bleszinski, and John Romero recounted the games that influenced them the most. GDC 2012 has come and gone. We're reminded, once again, of what a weird and wonderful industry we work in. The App Store now boasts over 25 billion served, Google gave the Android Market a name change, people buzzed about Valve making a game console, and Valve said "No we're not." Finally, if you return to World of Warcraft, Blizzard will give you a flying animal. Think about it!Tim Sweeney suggests that indies need to develop games that “a Zynga can’t clone.”

On Thursday, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney participated in a panel at GDC about the current indie game development scene, and how it's reminiscent of the old days of garage development. Sweeney pointed out that building an independent game is still about a bunch of developers making their creative visions come true with 2D pixel-based graphics, though there are obviously major differences between the monetization methods of the '80s and today. That's why, Sweeney says, indies must be vigilant against having their ideas ripped off.Is Valve making a game console or not?
By Joel Brodie
The answer is not, according to an interview by Kotaku with Doug Lombardi of Valve. Earlier this week, we reported the rumor that Valve which runs Steam, among the largest digital distribution platforms for games on the PC and Mac, was working on the "Steam Box."Valve is working with different types of hardware as cited in the original speculative article by The Verve. But, it's to test its upcoming feature, Steam Big Picture Mode UI, not to build a console to compete with Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.Gabe Newell can buy and sell you
It's no secret that being the head-honcho at a major video games company can make you a very wealthy person. We already know that Cliff Bleszinski owns at least one Lamborghini, and we imagine big-shots like Shigeru Miyamoto and Ken Levine are doing just fine too. Still, those guys may be mere peasants when it comes to Valve's Game Newell, who Forbes magazine has just ranked as the 854th richest person on the planet. Here are your 14th annual IGF winners
One of the best parts of the annual Game Developers Conference is the Independent Games Festival (IGF). This showcase allows indie developers from around the world to show off the games they've been working on which may not get a lot of mainstream press. Every year the best of the best are chosen for the IGF Awards, and here's the rundown of who won this year.
