Oberon Media announces casual games for 3D TV

With its recent rise in popularity and the prospect of a 3D television in every living room right around the corner, it was only a matter of time until the 3D craze hit casual gaming. It started last month with Escape the Lost Kingdom, and was seen on the iPhone with the April release of Crash Course – but no single announcement about the future possibilities of 3D casual gaming is as big as this. Oberon Media has just confirmed that it will be bringing a portion of it’s catalogueto 3DTV’s.

With its recent rise in popularity and the prospect of a 3D television in every living room right around the corner, it was only a matter of time until the 3D craze hit casual gaming. It started last month with Escape the Lost Kingdom, and was seen on the iPhone with the April release of Crash Course – but no single announcement about the future possibilities of 3D casual gaming is as big as this. Oberon Media has just confirmed that it will be bringing a portion of it’s catalogue games to 3DTV’s.

“Oberon is excited to extend our casual games catalog to this amazing new technology, and offer our users a brand new experience,” Sharon Rosenman, Senior Director ITV Business Partnerships said, “And with the addition of 3D games, Oberon can help our partners promote and differentiate their next-generation living room devices, while leveraging Oberon’s full-scale connected TV game solutions”

What sets Oberon Media’s announcement apart from the other releases mentioned is that their games will be available in stereoscopic 3D. This is the format used in recent cinema releases like Avatar, which is the standard for the 3D TV market. The other games? They’re available in anaglyphic 3D. It’s a fancy word, but all it really means is you’ll need the red and blue glasses that have been around since the 50’s. Stereoscopic 3D is the modern true 3D experience, and Oberon Media’s catalogue is looking to take advantage of that.

The only games confirmed thus far are those in the popular Dream Day Wedding franchise. The games will be optimized for the 3D TV experience, taking into account screen size, processing power, memory and input devices. Games will be accessible through Oberon’s distribution solutions, serving over 150 game services and interactive TV channels worldwide, or pre-loaded and embedded in 3D TVs purchased at retail.
