Microsoft’s takeover of Activision Blizzard could finally conclude as soon as tomorrow. After previously rejecting the deal, the Competition and Markets Authority in the UK has just approved it. This is a big step, as the CMA is one of the biggest hurdles the deal has faced.
Going back a bit, the CMA initially rejected the deal due to fears that Microsoft could create a cloud gaming monopoly.
To quell the fears, Microsoft has agreed that Activision will sell its cloud gaming rights to Ubisoft. Ubisoft is a separate entity, so Microsoft is unable to monopolise cloud gaming.
On Twitter, Microsoft’s President, Brad Smith, had the following to say about the CMA’s approval:
“We’re grateful for the CMA’s thorough review and decision today. We have now crossed the final regulatory hurdle to close this acquisition, which we believe will benefit players and the gaming industry worldwide.”
Microsoft and Activizion Blizzard first announced the potential takeover back in January 2022. The two companies have faced a bumpy road in getting it across the line.
Sony baulked at the loss of Call of Duty on its platforms. This caused Microsoft to forge agreements with Sony, Nintendo, and more. The goal is to assure fans that the biggest shooter series would still arrive on third party platforms.
This only covers the next decade though, and it’s unclear what Microsoft will do after that.
The deal could finalise as soon as tomorrow. The rumour mill is already swirling that a bunch of Activision games will drop on Game Pass the moment it does. This is unlikely to include the likes of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, or other recent or upcoming Activision Blizzard games.
Microsoft and Activision Blizzard have formally stated not to expect AB games on Game Pass until 2024, but Jez Corden of Windows Central tweeted otherwise. The full tweet reads:
“Our sources indicate (surprising nobody) that despite Activision’s statement, you can expect to see a bunch of Activision stuff hit Xbox Game Pass as soon as the deal is finalized.”
