Gigantic X is a brand new top-down shooter that draws inspiration from a number of different sources. There’s the breathtaking action of a bullet hell, the gigantic monsters from Monster Hunter, and the addictive loot-grabbing of Warframe.

All of this combines to create something quite unlike anything else on mobile. It’s perfect for dip in, dip out gameplay that showers you with loot whether you have a couple of minutes or hours to spare.

However, it’s a bit of a daunting prospect – particularly for genre newcomers. With that in mind, we thought we’d help bring you up to speed with a handy beginner’s guide. We’ll walk you through the experience and then move onto some more specific tips and tricks.

Gigantic X Beginner’s Guide – How it Works:

Gigantic X is a pretty standard top-down shooter. You work your way through linear levels shooting everything in your path in the name of sweet, sweet loot.

The controls are simple: you swipe your thumb on the left of the screen to move your character and tap virtual buttons on the right to use your special weapon abilities and dodge.

The challenge comes from monitoring your enemies for the telltale signs of an imminent attack. Most enemies have pretty obvious telegraphs for when they’re about to attack, and you can run or dodge most of these with ease. If you don’t, you’ll likely lose a hefty chunk of your HP.

Where to Begin:

When you first begin, you’ll face a number of tutorial missions. These teach you the basics of the controls, enemies you’ll face, and, more importantly, introduce you to the massive boss monsters you’ll face in the field.

What it doesn’t teach you is what to do when the training wheels come off. You just get chucked into the game and receive a series of missions to complete, not really understanding what it is you have to do.

Well, it’s not overly complex. We recommend you begin by choosing which of the three characters you like playing the most, then aim to complete missions that reward you with loot for that particular character.

On the hub screen, hit “Battle” then “Megacorp Mission” and look through the rewards for each mission on each planet. Each mission rewards gear for a different character, so we’d ignore the others for now and focus on completing missions that grant you gear for your favourite.

Also, each piece of gear is typically part of a set. Sets basically reward you with bonus perks for equipping a certain number of pieces of the same armour set. You might want to wear a complete set or mix and match to get perks from different sets – that’s up to you.

Either way, focus on completing missions that reward you with gear for your favourite character and equip it. Chase down sets you like and try and get the highest tier of each piece of equipment by grinding out missions.

When you reach certain level thresholds, you can change the difficulty, rewarding you with more powerful gear. This is the core gameplay loop.

Gigantic X Tips and Tricks:

Now that you understand the basics, we’re going to fire off a few bullet point tips and tricks:

  • Get your season pass and complete Missions: There’s a weekly season pass on offer in Gigantic X, which rewards you with awesome gear just for playing the game. The pass is split into a free and premium tier, with the premium providing more rewards and Missions in exchange for actual money. At least sign up for the free tier and choose the pass that provides rewards for your favourite character, then chase down missions. Each Mission you complete provides points that unlock a series of phases of reward. Also, when you complete a Mission, we recommend watching an advert to immediately unlock a new Mission. It saves the waiting.
  • Save up crafting materials to craft the gear you want: As you play missions, you’ll save up materials that you can spend on crafting gear you really want. It’ll take quite some time before you can actually afford to craft anything, but it’s worth keeping in mind that the crafting system is there so you can grind out materials you need.
  • Get your Package rewards: On the hub screen, tap “Package” to receive some nice rewards just for playing. This should be one of the first things you do, as you’ll get a bunch of useful resources just for downloading the game.
  • Pay attention to enemy attack patterns: Enemies will typically telegraph their attacks, allowing you to easily avoid damage if you pay attention. Whenever you encounter a new enemy, we’d recommend watching them for a few seconds to see what they do. Chances are, you’ll spot the telltale signs of an imminent attack with ease. Death animations also count, as many enemies explode upon death.
  • Use your dodge sparingly: Remember, you only have three dodge charges to use before you run out and have to wait for them to recharge. With that in mind, we recommend only using your dodge when you really need it.
