If you've got small children and a touchscreen device, there's a pretty decent chance you've already encountered a Toca Boca product or three. That being the case, we can probably dispense with the formal introductions and get right to Toca Pet Doctor, a game seeking kids 2 through 6 to help 15 different pets with their problems. The result is a colorful but brief burst of fun that should put some smiles on the faces of the baby teeth set.When it comes to intuitive design, Toca Boca is typically on point, and that's once again the case with Toca Pet Doctor. What you see is what you get: 15 different animals awaiting attention with nary a human in sight. It's like the waiting room to the world's cutest and quietest veterinarian's office.Tapping on an animal begins its mini-game, each of which asks the player to heal an injury of some sort before feeding the animal in snack. Not all of the maladies are created equal, as the rabbit has what appears to be a very bad multi-bone fracture but the worm simply has his tail tied in a small knot.

For the last fifteen years I've sported a military-grade buzz cut, but not today. Today I am resplendent in an enormous shock of pink curls. Yesterday, it was long and green. Tomorrow, I think I might try an orange Mohawk.This is not because I've suddenly become a wig fanatic, but all thanks to the latest app from Toca Boca, Toca Hair Salon Me. As its name suggests, it allows you to put your own face into a digital avatar and then style and colour their hair to your heart's content. You can even add accessories like hats and glasses, change the color of their clothes, and pose them for a photo."Like everything the developer does, it's all perfectly intuitive. Start by browsing the pictures on your device, or taking another in-app so you don't have to pop out and boot the camera. Then fit your chosen image into one of four face shapes and sizes, adjust the apps' estimation of where the mouth and eyes are, and style away.The technology behind this is seriously impressive. So long as your photo is a pretty tight fit for the chosen head and you get the eyes and mouth right, it brings your avatar to life with uncanny accuracy. The first time I saw myself in the chair, closing my eyes against the hairspray, twisting away from the dryer and emitting little 'ooh' and 'aah' noises of appreciation, it actually creeped me out so much I had to put the iPad down and walk away.

Toca Boca is rightly revered as one of the best app developers for children around. Their games are distinctive, easy to play, cheap, educational, and contain no advertising or in-app purchases. Most of their games are aimed at pre-school or a little older, but some of their more recent apps are better suited for slightly older kids; and their latest, Toca Mini, falls into that category.Each time you play, you're given a blank white doll. But this isn't just any old doll. It's a doll that moves around, stretching, scratching, and even pulling bodybuilding poses. It's on a rotating pedestal so you can see it from any angle you like. Spin it, and it mimes ballet moves. Spin it too fast and it'll get dizzy and roll around."But the App Store is full of interactive figurines for little ones. What Toca Mini does is allow you to style your creation as you please. Tapping on the head, legs, torso, or each arm zooms in and offers you a color palette to choose from, and you spread your chosen hue just by pulling it up and down the selected body part, allowing you to block in color or make stripes as you please.As well as color, there's a variety of shapes and patterns you can color in and then stick onto your doll. Delightfully these resize and wrap around the body depending on where you put them, so a smiling spider will be small and sit flat on a sleeve, but loom large across and bend around a belly.

Toca Boca has become a byword for quality in children's apps. Their games encourage exploration and experimentation, yet come without any hidden in-app purchases or other hidden nasties. Recently they've boldly started branching out into apps for slightly older kids, starting with Toca Builders and now moving to the racetrack with Toca Cars.Like all their other games, it's incredibly simple to pick up and play. You choose a racer and then start steering them around a virtual environment simply by touching the screen in the direction you want to move. As you drive and skid around, you'll encounter houses, traffic lights, trees, and other bits of scenery you can bulldoze over and push around. Wreak too much havoc and there's a simple button press to reset everything again.But you're not limited to just knocking things over: many of the things you'll encounter are interactive. Most obvious are various ramps that allow your little racer to pull off different kinds of spins and jumps. There are puddles of paint to drive through and color the world with tire tracks. Best of all are the other characters, an irate robot that pushes you away, a shy bird that flees and hides, and an enthusiastic dog who follows you about.

Toca Boca has become the name to contend with in the world of pre-schooler apps. Apparently able to consistently make accessible, imaginative, fun apps out of thin air, their releases have become de-facto purchases for many parents. But, perhaps bored with the lack of challenge resulting from their mastery, they've decided to branch out into the realm of primary school children.
