It's tough to stack the deck against yourself any worse than Samurai vs Zombies Defense did. A game with zombies? Been there. How about samurais? Done that. Maybe castle defense gameplay? Overdone. There's a freemium purchases model? I've got enough places to drop dollar after dollar in micro-transactions into, thanks. So what does Samurai vs Zombies Defense have going for it? Well it's pretty great fun, so there's that.

That said, there is often a challenge in finding that sweet spot between how much in-app content need be purchased without limiting the game in general. Glu Mobile's new iOS release, Rogue Racing, walks that line a bit hap-hazardly. Well-paced and visually appealing for a free mobile racer, it presses a bit too hard in trying to get players to pay-to-play in a way that hinders the experience.

The simulation app puts players into the role of an aspiring star or starlet as they attempt to reach their dream of super-stardom in Hollywood. Working their way up from slummy apartments to luxury hotels, the game sounds interesting enough but comes with a central mechanic that is just plain boring.

Glu Games is quite happy to feed mobile gamers hungry for more city builders with Toy Village, a fairly basic city building game with a novel look and premise. In Toy Village, you're building a city for toy characters, so everything has a whimsical look right out of Babes in Toyland or Toy Story. Your main NPC mascot is Patch, a fluffy stuffed dog, and the buildings you erect distinctly look and feel like they've been assembled from colorful plastic.

The term "freemium" is all too easily associated with simple click management games like FarmVille, CityVille, and the like. At the end of the day, freemium is really nothing more than an innovative pricing structure that lets players dabble in games at no cost, only spending money on the titles they really love. It's a formula that can just as easily be applied to hardcore action titles as it can to the latest restaurant simulation. Glu seems to think so too, and they're proving it with Blood & Glory - an Infinity Blade play-a-like that you can download for the low low price of free.
