    An hour into my time with Heralds of Chaos, I found myself wondering why it's so hard to find something like this among all the other social trading card games on Facebook. Its gameplay may reveal a greater focus on polish than innovation, but I've nevertheless experienced few other social trading card games that do such a good job at hammering out an entertaining narrative from a game about cards. Other card games have seasoned their gameplay with stories, of course, but Heralds of Chaos does it so well that it's enough to trump some of its shortcomings.

    Over 125 different monsters to tame and train; each aligned with a specific Zodiac to give them an edge or handicap against other creatures. Beautifully rendered characters and environments that are as twisted and bizarre as they are compelling. A non-existent entry fee. Monster Galaxy: Exile certainly seems to have a lot going for it. On paper. But once the countdown timers start adding up, it begins to feel like it's holding itself hostage.

    Up until now, playing a social fighting game usually meant plugging in some stats, pressing a button, and hoping that your character does more damage than the other guy, and most don't even let you see the combat aside from swooshes or a stock audio file of swords clashing. It's a genre that has always demanded more from your imagination than your skills, in other words, and even the best titles offer a few weeks' worth of enjoyment at best. Not so with Soul Crash. Here is a game that actually feels like a fighting game, and its features point to a day when playing a version of Street Fighter may be feasible for Facebook.

    Monster Galaxy on Facebook was a serviceable clone of Pokemon that brought the basic gameplay from Nintendo's wildly successful franchise and added in the pre-requisite social features. It wasn't perfect, but you could still catch 'em all. And it wasn't portable, which took away from some of the appeal. After all, one of the best parts of Pokemon is that you can play on the go. That's now changed with the release of the spin-off Monster Galaxy: The Zodiac Islands for iPhone, which provides a similar, less complex experience that you can put in your pocket.

    Monster Galaxy is something unusual and ambitious for Facebook, an attempt to create a clone of Nintendo's extraordinarily deep Pokemon RPGs that's friendly to social gameplay. While there are very few true social mechanics in Monster Galaxy, the game is largely successful at bringing the appeal of monster training and collecting games into something you can play for free on Facebook. The game features 120 distinct monsters to battle and capture, without any of the "spend money if you want this rare monster!" shenanigans you might expect.
