I've developed a kind of love/hate relationship with iOS action RPGs over the years. They're typically fun but have some incredibly dull stories. Or they look absolutely gorgeous but control poorly. It's always something. Sword of Inferno is no different in that "stuff" holds it back from perfection just like all the others, but the core game is far too fantastic for me to really care about that.
Life as a god must be pretty great. The whole "all-knowing benevolence and unmatchable power" thing is a pretty sweet gig. Today, gods generally get along pretty well (though the same can't always be said of their followers!). Anyone familiar with Greek mythology can tell you things in the godly realms weren't always so great though. Wars amongst the powerful figures were common. Yet there may be no battle in the mythos as brutal as the one depicted in Age of Myth. This Athenian era fighter will have you playing the role of a hero in Zeus's army. But is it a heavenly fit on your mobile device, or does this title belong in the netherworld?
While debates may rage about where humans came from, there is little question that animals go through forms of evolution. These types of changes often occur to adapt to a given environment and increase the likelihood of survival. This is clearly the case in Armed Beasts. Animals that often experience attacks from predators and those higher on the food chain have evolved to have extremely accurate aim with ranged weaponry. And while animals that stand upright and attack with things like shotguns and uzis may seem absurd, but I'll be folding up my tinfoil hat and stockpiling canned goods.
If you're up on your Greek mythology, then you probably already know that the gods of Olympus weren't always benevolent. Sure, Zeus would sometimes intervene in mortals' lives—typically to score with a maiden—but he was just as content to kick back with a chalice of the good stuff while humanity burned. Age of Myth is an iOS action/defense game that showcases Zeus's rare, protective side.
If you're not already familiar with it, there's a style of 2D action games that has come to be known as "Metroidvania". This refers to the mashing of styles made popular by the traditional Metroid and Castlevania games. Players hack, slash and whip their way around a larger map, room by room, looking for treasure and leveling up their characters and weapons. It's a tried and true formula that has been adapted very well by many other teams over the last couple of decades. CWA Games has come around with Avenger to take a stab at making a mobile game in this classic style, so let's see how it holds up.
