We’re living in a golden age of word games – but if you’re anything like us you’re totally ready to play a word game that doesn’t end with the letters D, L, and E.
Word Spiral, from developer Wireless Marvels, is a whole new proposition. It’s a little bit like Boggle, in that you have to make words by stringing together letters, but in every other respect it’s like nothing we’ve ever played before.
Here’s how it works.
You’re presented with a spiral, made up of dozens of sections containing letters. To make a word, all you need to do is tap the relevant letters in the right order. Naturally, you can only tap a letter if it’s adjacent to the previous letter.
Once you’ve finished making your word, the final step is to tap the last letter to make the entire word disappear from the spiral, at which point all the other letters shuffle around to fill the gaps, opening up new pathways for new words.
Your end goal is to make the entire spiral disappear.
Like all the best word games, Word Spiral is simple to grasp but very difficult to master. Fortunately, Wireless Marvels has included a helpful AI tool, which dispenses hints on request, identifying the best move on offer from its dictionary of more than 200,000 words.
Or you can tap Solve to let the AI complete the whole puzzle for you, or Solve (with detail) to complete it while showing you all the words it could have gone with at each juncture.
There’s also a Challenge Mode, which lets you try as many times as you like to get an unbeatable high score on a given spiral, and then submit your best attempt to the leaderboard to see how you stack up against both the AI and your fellow players that week.
Word Spiral is a premium game, with no ads to break your flow. You can grab it for just 99c right now on the Google Play Store, the App Store, or Steam. You can also keep up with the latest Word Spiral news on their official website.
