Most mobile online shooters let you simulate all sorts of combat actions: firing and reloading a variety of weapons, zooming in on targets, lobbing grenades, and so on. You can walk, run, look around, and jump, too. So it’s kind of weird that you generally can’t talk to anyone.

Well you can now – as long as Modern Combat 5: Blackout is your online shooter of choice.

Thanks to Vivox, a company that specializes in bringing text and voice chat to online games, Gameloft’s best-in-class mobile FPS is now abuzz with the sounds of players barking orders and yelling in celebration.

For the uninitiated, Modern Combat 5: Blackout is basically the closest thing you’ll find on mobile to a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or Black Ops game.

While it boasts a single-player campaign, which takes you on a globetrotting tour of carnage from Venice to Tokyo and beyond, the multiplayer is the main event. That’s why there are – count ‘em – ten different multiplayer modes (and yes, one of them is battle royale).

Fire at will

You can choose from nine soldier classes, and more than a hundred different weapons, all of which are customizable. Your avatar is customizable, too. There are more possible combinations than stars in the night sky. Probably.

Like the Call of Duty games, Modern Combat: Blackout features an XP system, as well as skill points that you can spend on unlocking new class-specific skills. It boasts 11 unique maps.

On top of all that there are regular events, where you can win in-game rewards and prizes. If you’re a competitive sort, you can strut your stuff on the game’s various leaderboards, like some kind of eSports show off.

Vivox’s industry-leading comms technology is the icing on the cake, bringing matches to life as you and your teammates share tactics on the fly, coordinate battlefield maneuvers, and generally have a laugh.

Modern Combat 5: Blackout is available right now for free on Google Play and the App Store.
