Clash of Beasts is one of the most promising games of 2021. Ubisoft’s hotly anticipated title first roared onto the scene in May last year, and now you can join players all over the world in commanding an army of fantastic beasts.
In case the headlines passed you by, Clash of Beasts is a strategy game with tower defense elements. It sees you playing as a mercenary who sees his mother murdered – and with revenge in his heart looks to stop Morvus from taking control of the ancient being Shevara.
The campaign sees you enter the realm of Veren, where certain individuals – yourself and your erstwhile mother included – are blessed with the Beastmaster’s Spark. This magical power allows Beastmasters to command titanic beasts, making them a powerful military asset.
Clash of Beasts involves you summoning beasts with soulstones, fighting in battles, collecting loot – then investing this loot in upgrading your beasts and summoning new ones.
Battles take a variety of forms, including campaign, PvP, PvE, and Clan War modes. Whichever kind you’re playing you’ve got total control over your beast though – as you guide it around the screen with your finger.
Each beast is capable of flattening a stronghold in minutes under the right leadership, and right now there are 65 of them available, across four classes and five affinities.
They all have their own attacks and spells, too, giving you a mind-boggling array of tactical options to explore to rain down destruction on your enemies.
Clash of Beasts is also a tower defense game of course, with other players constantly attempting to invade and destroy your stronghold. To fend them off you’ll need to deploy towers, with twelve different kinds to choose from.
Some towers fire projectiles, while others have more creative effects like freezing enemies. Like beasts, these also have their own affinities, forcing you to consider the synergies that you can achieve by combining the right ones on the battlefield.
There’s also an extensive city-building element, and you can team up with your friends to make sure your bastion is as impenetrable as possible.
