Doodle Jump! Not Angry Birds, Flight Control, or even Rappin’ Granny. How do we know? Apple has just released a collection of lists that detail the most successful paid and free iPhone and iPad apps to date.

To no one’s surprised, games made up nine of the ten entries on the Top Paid iPhone Apps list. What we weren’t expecting, however, was where some of these games placed. Angry Birds ended up at #4, behind Doodle Jump, Tap Tap Revenge 3, and Pocket God.

And then there’s the question of the three Tap Tap Revenge entries on the list – should they even be included? These apps were all free when they were current, only switching to paid once a sequel came out. This means the bulk of their downloads happened when they were still free apps. So why include them on the Paid list?

Surprises also happened in the three remaining categories. The top free lists for both iPhone and iPad were surprisingly devoid of games, with Paper Toss making the #10 spot on iPhone and Solitaire making the #10 spot on iPad. The paid iPad apps list was also something of a mystery, with only four games showing up, and none of them being the games you’d expect. StickWars, Backbreaker Football, BlocksClassic and Cro-Mag Rally were the lone game entries on the list. No Angry Birds HD. No Carcassonne, World of Goo or Osmos – none of the iPad games that you’d expect to see on a top 10 list. In fact, when apps like iFart Mobile make the Top Paid list, you can’t help but wonder how low sales of iPad apps really are.

While these are the definitive lists put forth by Apple, it should probably be noted that each country’s App Store seems to have its own variation on the list. For example, Flight Control didn’t quite make the list on the Canadian App Store, instead being replaced by WhatsApp Messenger. Canada’s Free iPad Apps list look quite different as well, with titles like Adobe Photoshop Express and CBC Hockey making the cut. If you live outside the US, be sure to check your local App Store to see which apps are most successful where you live.
