Square Enix joins the cloud gaming race with Core Online

Square Enix happens to know you like video games. Don’t ask how they obtained such juicy info – they just did. The bright side is that they’re using this newfound knowledge for good, and launching a service that lets you play a selection of their games via browser. Called Core Online, it soft-launched earlier today with Mini Ninjas and Hitman: Blood Money in tow. And worry not, awesome people: More games are on the way.

There are a couple of different ways to get a game going in Core Online. On the free end of the spectrum, you can earn chunks of play time by viewing ads. There’s a correlation between ad length and how much time you earn, so watching longer ads is in your best interest.

If you’re firmly against advertisements (way to put down The Man!), you can also purchase portions or entire games and play them at your leisure. At present, Hitman: Blood Money costs a total of $4.99, with each chapter priced at $0.49. Mini Ninjas costs $6.99, and the chapters are also priced at $0.49. It seems like a fairly nominal fee for both games, but offering users a chance to play them free of charge is certainly a nice touch, too.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is set to arrive next month, with Gyromancer and Tomb Raider: Underworld arriving sometime after. Beyond that, things are a little ambiguous. More games are definitely en route, but Square Enix hasn’t announced them just yet. When they do, though, we’ll be sure to keep you informed!
