Sponge Break Is a Chaotic, Co-Op Rafting Adventure, Launching This Week on PC

This is what most of us usually expect when a new title is announced. Developer Goose Byte Games and publisher Balor Games had just revealed their upcoming game Sponge Break recently. And now, they’re launching it next week. Yep, already or rather all ready!

So, Sponge Break is coming to Steam on July 30th, 2026, and it’ll cost $7.99. Revealed earlier this month, it saw the recent playtest hit 500,000 minutes played. The game supports one to four players with drop-in co-op, and also includes a solo mode.

Sponge Break is as dumb as it is funny

You and up to three other players are literally sponges trying to escape the tyranny of the kitchen sink after finally breaking free. Unfortunately, freedom isn’t exactly peaceful because now you’re stuck on an incredibly fragile raft floating through the world’s most dangerous rapids.

Your main tool is a plunger that doubles as a grappling hook, plus a whole lot of optimism because your raft definitely isn’t built to last. Your goal is to just make it down the river. But the river is constantly trying to destroy you.

Your raft is basically held together by wishful thinking, and you’re also supposed to avoid getting wet. On top of that, you’ll need to solve physics-based puzzles, dodge environmental hazards, avoid attacks from wildlife, and fight beavers.

Sponge Break has a proximity voice chat feature. Your sponge actually lip-syncs while you talk, so your teammates will see your little sponge yelling in real time. You can coordinate, panic, sing sea shanties, or scream warnings.

You’ll have a few teamwork tools to help out. Besides the plunger grappling hook, you can throw anything that isn’t bolted down and stash loot in a shared raft inventory. You’ll probably lose most of that loot eventually, but at least everyone gets to share the disappointment equally.

There are more than 100 unlockable cosmetic options in Sponge Break. You can change your sponge’s eyes, eyebrows, mouths, hats, inflatable buoys, and plunger. There are also emotes for celebrating successful runs or very dramatically blaming whoever just sank the raft.
