Sparky Rush: Purrils in Pawsville! brings a pretty fun narrative. It’s a PS1-style retro psychological horror that has a lost media setup. It masquerades as a 1996 3D platformer by a fictional developer who went missing and resurfaces years later after a huge data leak.

So, in this alternate history, a forgotten PlayStation-era game vanished before release. Sparky Rush: Purrils in Pawsville! was supposed to become the first project from the newly founded Mitch-Collins Interactive, but the publisher mysteriously cancelled it in 1996 before anyone could actually play it.

Then, everything changed after a data breach by a group called Inner Circle in 2013. They released the game online, letting players download the original .bin file and run it using any Polybius Series X emulator. In fact, the devs recommend using the fictional Vapor Snake PSX Emulator to play it.

Moving on to the actual game, outside of lore and all, Sparky Rush: Purrils in Pawsville! lets you play as Sparky. He’s a dog from the fictional 1940 cartoon The Amazing Sparky!. The narrative is all about buried prototypes and creepypasta rumours, so it’s not as cute as it looks.

At first, it’s exactly what you’d expect from an old PS1 mascot platformer. Sparky is trying to rescue his friends after they’re captured by the evil genius cat Sweetie. You’re running around collecting items, jumping over obstacles, unlocking new levels, finding secret areas, and powering Sparky up.

But Sparky Rush: Purrils in Pawsville! is a horror game in the guise of a platformer, remember?

The world begins falling apart as you progress. The cheerful atmosphere disappears, environments start breaking down, and it turns into a psychological horror story centred around the developer who made the game.

He gradually descends into complete sorrow and madness before mysteriously disappearing. So, your goal shifts from saving Sparky’s friends to uncovering the secrets the developer left hidden inside the game.
