Rovio introduces cloud saves with Rovio Accounts

The fact that you can play Angry Birds on basically every device under the sun is pretty cool. What’s less cool, however, is that your progress isn’t saved between devices. With the newly launched Rovio Accounts, that’s something Rovio is hoping to change.

When you create a Rovio Account for a game you’re playing, your progress is then associated with that account. So when you sign in on another device, your progress is waiting for you. This isn’t exactly new — we’ve seen quite a few developers offer a similar feature in the past — but it’s still good to see a studio as big as Rovio adopting it.

For the moment, The Croods and the original Angry Birds are the only games offering Rovio Accounts. The former has been rolled out worldwide, and the latter is currently only available in Finland and Poland. Rovio plans on bringing the service to all of their games in the future, so be on the lookout for that.

In the meantime, have fun playing The Croods, I guess?

Initiation: Ever Played This Game? (Part 2 of 4)

    By Vincent St. John

Initiation sounds a little scarier than it actually is - basically, the more relevant experiences and reference points you have for a particular game, the more "Initiated" you are as a member of that game's audience. When the term "casual games" first entered our industry's lexicon, this is what we talked about. "Hardcore" gamers were those who had been playing for years, internalizing the rules of their games to the point of second nature. Those "in the know" were considered gamers, and anyone else was not. Then games like Bejeweled challenged these standards and re-visited a time when gaming was in its infancy, and there was no such thing as an "initiated" gamer.

Since it launched last month on Facebook, Playfish's Greco/Roman city building game My Empire has grown to nearly 5 million monthly active users. Gamezebo sat down with Are Mack Growen, General Manager of Playfish China, to talk about what sets My Empire apart in a sea of "me too" titles.
