Ron Gilbert’s not making a new Monkey Island, but if he was…

Just in case anyone misconstrues that headline, I want to reiterate that Ron Gilbert IS NOT planning on making a new Monkey Island game. He hasn’t gone so far as to say he never would, but it isn’t in the cards for the time being. A man can daydream, however, and Gilbert did just that in a recent post on his Grumpy Gamer blog.

Gilbert wrote up a lengthy list of what a new Monkey Island game from him would look like, as well as what kind of approach he’d take in developing it. There would be full voice-acting, for example, and it would take place after Monkey Island 2. “My apologies to the all talented people who worked on them and the people who loved them,” Gilbert said of all the Monkey Island games after the second. “But I’d want to pick up where I left off.”

Considering that Gilbert co-created the series, that seems fair enough.

As much as I’d love to spoil the entire list, it’s probably best that you read it over on Gilbert’s blog. Once you’re done, though, you should come back and let us know in the comments how you feel about it all. I’m personally excited about it, although it’s clear there are quite a few hoops that Gilbert and others would have to go through in order for us to ever see a new Monkey Island game. Still, it’s great to see that he cares so much.
