Real Racing 3 will be free(mium) as a bird

Firemonkeys, the studio behind the upcoming Real Racing 3, have confirmed in a forum post at Touch Arcade that the game will be free to play. This marks a dramatic shift for the series, as previous entries subscribed to that strange, ancient premium model, where you had to pay money upfront before owning a game. Totally weird, right?

“Today we announced Real Racing 3 will be free. And yes, Real Racing 3 was designed from the ground up to be a free to play experience. We are so excited about this game and wanted it to be accessible to everyone so we didn’t want there to be any barriers to entry,” Firemonkeys’ Sam Mayo said in a forum post.

That’s excellent news, as it rarely goes over well when a once-premium game is switched over to the freemium model. Many developers have tried, but few have succeeded.

And you know what else doesn’t go over well? Bad games. Mayo assured the fans that Real Racing 3 won’t be one:

“At launch we have 46 licensed vehicles covering 3 classes, a 22 car grid, real world tracks, 8 varied event types and 900+ events. This means hundreds of hours of gameplay for free making this one of the most expansive games ever on mobile. We plan to continue to add more free and exciting content with every update,” he said.

You don’t need me to tell you that that’s a lot of vehicles and events. Unless you do, in which case: that’s a lot of vehicles and events. There we go.

Real Racing 3 is set to launch on February 28.
