Insomniac Games is one of the biggest names in console development, having created notable series like Ratchet & Clank and Resistance. And now the studio is going to start making Facebook games.

The new division has been dubbed Insomniac Click, and will be focused on creating social games for both web and mobile. And it looks like it will be creating games that are different from typical Facebook fare.

“Many social games out there are more activities than games,” Insomniac CCO Brian Hastings blogged, “that is, a set of tools but no problem. For instance, you plant crops and then harvest them to make more money so you can plant more crops. Your tools are: pick a crop, plant it somewhere, harvest a ripened crop.

But what problem are you solving? There really isn’t one. You can’t succeed and you can’t fail and that’s part of the fun. But at the same time, without having a problem to solve, it’s less of an actual game than Tic-Tac-Toe.”

Insomniac has actually been working on social games for around a year, but is focusing on creating a more polished experience as opposed to releasing something quickly. “We wanted to make a game that had all the depth and content of a console game, but playable for free on Facebook,” said Hastings.

We’ll have to wait a while to hear just what that game might be, but the studio says it will be making announcements in the coming months.
