According to Distimo, one of many mobile app analytics startups, the top three most popular categories of games are puzzle (15%), arcade, and arcade (11%, respectively). The top three grossing categories (aka, the ones that pay the bills) are action (22%), arcade (12%), and adventure (9%).

The most expensive games on the iPhone are role-playing games (average price of $7.96)
Games are the most popular app category on the iPhone (53%)
Apple has the most apps (150,000) but the second biggest app marketplace is Google’s Android (20,000)

Interestingly enough, no mention of the ever-popular Download category, hidden object games. Perhaps the iPad with its bigger screen will change that.
