Pac-Man making his grand return to television

My childhood, it returns.

Avi Arad and Disney XD have just announced that Pac-Man will be returning to television in the upcoming series Pac-Man: The Adventure Begins. The cartoon will showcase the ghost-chomping yellow ball and his buddies as they brave the perils of… high school. That’s right, we’re getting an adolescent Pac-Man who is probably more concerned with finding a prom date than munching the cherries before they vanish, but it’s better than nothing, right?

“I am very excited about producing Pac-Man: The Adventure Begins, the 3D animated series, with Rick Ungar,” said Arad. “Pac-Man is one of the world’s greatest icons. He is funny and adventurous and will bring his tone and abilities to this beautifully executed animated series. For more than 30 years, Pac-Man has been a household name. Having this property on Disney XD is its rightful place to be.”

While we’re unlikely to return to the golden age when game characters like Pac-Man, Sonic, Mario and more had their own Saturday morning cartoons, it’s still nice to see such a vaunted piece of gaming history finding ways to connect with a new audience. The show has been in the works for a while now, so we’re glad to see that it’s finally taking off. And yes, you can be sure that even though I’m acting like I’m too cool to watch it right now I’ll absolutely be setting my DVR when the debut episode hits later this year.
