Take this rumour with a huge pinch of salt, but WCCFTech has reported that the Nintendo Switch 2 could launch in September 2024 with two separate models.

The source? A Discord user that goes by the name of SoldierDelta. That means it’s got to be true, right?! Well, to be fair to them, they have form after leaking Team Ninja’s Rise of the Ronin.

When is the Supposed Nintendo Switch 2 Release Date?

Besides, the September 24, 2024 release date does line up with industry expectations. Nintendo has already confirmed that no new hardware will launch in this financial year, which ends in March 2024.

SoldierDelta claimed that a September 24, 2024 release date is planned, though suggested that it might be a placeholder. The Discord user clarified that it might end up being pushed back to November 2024.

Two Nintendo Switch 2 Models?

But what about these two models? Well, if SoldierDelta is to be believed, the Switch 2 will follow the PS5 route of launching with a standard and digital-only model.

The standard will apparently retail for $499.999, while the digital will aim for $449.99. As you can expect, the digital won’t support physical media, in whatever form Nintendo releases it in for the Switch 2.

Could That Happen?

This is where I’m less convinced. As anecdotal as this comment is, Nintendo’s audience is big on physical media. You have a much broader audience, that may be less tech-savvy than the PS5 and Xbox.

True, it’s not the same as Nintendo moving away from physical media entirely. The standard edition still supports it, after all.

But what is the point in this move? $50 is hardly a saving when you consider how much you can save by purchasing physical games following the launch window.

What if it’s the Pro or Lite?

I could totally see Nintendo launching with a ‘Pro’ or ‘Lite’ model given the success of the Lite and OLED respectively, but a digital-only model? It just doesn’t feel very Nintendo to me.

However, all we can do is wait and see. For more Switch 2 rumours, check out our report on Monster Hunter 6.
