New OUYA console to be released annually

OUYA CEO Julie Ehrman revealed in an interview with Engadget that a new OUYA console will release annually. OUYA CEO Julie Ehrman revealed in an interview with Engadget that a new OUYA console will release annually. The goal is to constantly iterate on the hardware and take advantage of new technology as it releases – the recently announced Tegra 4 chip being a prime example. So be on the lookout for the OUYA 20, which should release sometime in 2033.

“We’ll take advantage of faster, better processors, take advantage of prices falling. So if we can get more than 8GB of Flash in our box, we will,” Ehrman told Engadget. And while the notion of having to purchase a new console annually sounds both draining and cumbersome, it isn’t actually necessary. Every game purchased on an OUYA will be backwards compatible, and software will be tied to the user (ostensibly their profile), as opposed to the console itself. So if you don’t feel compelled to pick up the OUYA 2 when it releases next year, you won’t be left in the dust.

This is the third announcement in a trifecta of recent announcements for the OUYA. It was revealed yesterday that both Double Fine and Words With Friends co-creator Paul Bettner will be bringng games to the platform, and the day before it was announced via Kickstarter update that OUYAs would be purchasable in retail stores like Best Buy and GameStop.

Does this news alter your opinion at all about the OUYA? Personally, I think it’s great that the company is forming a plan that extends beyond just the first year of the console’s life. It gives me hope that, were I to purchase one, I wouldn’t be stuck with a useless brick after a couple of years. Let us know what you think in the comments!
