Minecraft – Pocket Edition to get a massive update February 8th

Minecraft – Pocket Edition was a long time coming to mobile devices. But when it finally arrived, it wasn’t really what people wanted, including a general lack of content and being saddled with limitations thanks to said devices’ hardware. Despite this, developer Mojang promised lots of stuff with updates and then … nothing. There’s been a lot of silence from that end about when folks could expect the patch, but Mojang’s finally announced a definite date.

Designer Daniel Kaplan took to Mojang’s blog to deliver the news. First off, he made a point of apologizing for the delay, explaining:

” As I stated in aprevious postwe had an initial plan of making Minecraft – Pocket Edition more like Minecraft Creative. But alas we were wrong. We have read tons of comments and feedback and it seems like we made a huge mistake. You wanted monsters, resources, animals and more different blocks. This means that the initial code we had writtendidn’texactly fit with the new plan where we wanted to add all the stuff you have been asking for. So we have been reorganizing, rewritten and changed the whole plan for Minecraft – Pocket Edition.”

He then announced that that the update will submit the update to both the Android Market and the iOS App Store by February 8th. The update will include support of survival aspects, “some neat looking animals” and a number of new blocks. However, crafting won’t be included, since Mojang is working on redesigning the GUI.

Hopefully Mojang is able to meet its self-imposed deadline. From the sound of things, the next few updates are going to meet a lot of fans very happy.
