The gods are dead, and unworldly creatures are laying siege to the homes and towns of good people. What can you do? If you pledge to Stoic’s Kickstarter for The Banner Saga, you might gain the chance to fight back, accompanied by gorgeous, hand-drawn cinematics.

The Banner Saga is a turn-based strategy game that revolves around vikings, and the things that vikings hack up. The game draws heavily from Norse mythology, and its method of storytelling is one of its most stunning features: the battle scenes and in-game cinemas are “painstakingly hand-animated,” and will instantly make you nostalgic for the best days of Bluth and Disney.

The Banner Saga, which will be available, DRM-Free, on PC and Mac if the Kickstarter is successful, is being worked on by Arnie Jorgensen (concept artist for Star Wars Galaxies and Star Wars: The Old Republic), Alex Thomas (illustrator, animator, and screenplay writer for Shadowbane and The Old Republic), and John Watson (lead combat programmer on The Old Republic).

Stoic hopes to assemble the game in three “Chapters,” and plans for each Chapter to be its own full, self-contained game. “Our goal is that when all chapters are complete, each game will both stand on their own, AND form a fantastic and cohesive whole, like any great series of books, movies, or games,” the company states on the game’s Kickstarter page.

Stoic is aiming to raise the $100,000 that’s necessary for The Banner Saga‘s development by April 20. If you chip in like a good viking, you’re in for some truly unique prizes. For a $10 pledge, you score a digital copy of The Banner Saga with all its Chapter One content, plus planned upgrades to the game’s multiplayer options. For $25, you get a Special Edition version of the game that includes a digital art book, and a shout-out in the game’s credits. For $50, you can have your “Family Crest” inserted in the game. And for big spenders, a pledge of $5,000 or more will prompt Stoic to rotoscope you and put you in the game. Wowsers!
