Kickstarter Picks: Star Command

Back in April, Gamezebo previewed an exciting new game called Star Command. It looked a little like a Kariosoft game if Kairosoft set their games in the Star Trek universe. It was a combination that could scratch two of our nerdier itches exquisitely. But that was all the way back in April, and we haven’t heard a peep about the game from developer Warballoon Studios since. Now they’re back – and they’re hoping for your help to fund the rest of Star Command‘s development.

If you’ve read our preview from back in April, you’re no doubt familiar with the concept. Players will take command of their own starship and explore the galaxy. You’ll be able to practice diplomacy, science, trade, war – anything your little heart desires. As the game progresses you’ll be able to outfit your ship with new rooms, train your crew, research new technologies, and more. It’s the complete James T. Kirk experience, minus the Kobiyashi Maru (we hope!)

But as the voice of the starhip’s computer tells us in the trailer, “containing the vastness of space into a portable device is an expensive endeavour.” As such, they’ve started up a Kickstarter page to raise the funds needed. And if you have any doubts about why they need them, Warballoon Studios has some ambitious plans: “Our goal is to be a good game, not just a good mobile game,” the team writes in their KickStarter activity page. “Why does the DS and PSP get these deep experience but iOS and Android get cheap parlor games and physics demos? THIS MUST CHANGE!”

The rewards for different pledge levels run the gamut. Depending on your level of contribution, you can get anything from a digital copy of the game’s soundtrack to a map of the galaxy, “uniform,” t-shirt, and even your own likeness in the game! Best of all, any pledge of $25 or more will give you free access to an exclusive in-game room, as well as all of Star Command‘s planned downloadable content.

The team is aiming to have this out for iOS and Android by the end of the year, but they’ll need your help to make it happen. If you’re a fan of Star Trek, space games, or just intriguing sim design, Star Command is going to be one to keep on your radar over the coming months.

Kickstarter Picks is a new regular series on Gamezebo that will profile Kickstarter projects in the world of video games. We’re doing this in the hopes of calling attention to interesting projects in need of funding, so please, if a game looks like something you’d want to play, don’t hesitate to lend it your support!
