The makers of the steampunk-style airship combat game Guns of Icarus Online have taken to Kickstarter to fund an “Adventure Mode” expansion that will give the game a persistent online world, explorable towns, six player-run factions and a whole lot more.

Guns of Icarus Online is already available on Steam in a “Skirmish Mode,” but now the development team at Muse Games wants to make it even bigger and better with the addition of MMO features to its team-based airship combat. Skirmish Mode sounds awfully cool – keep your steampunk-style airship afloat while blasting others out of the sky as an Engineer, Gunner or Pilot – but “Adventure Mode” promises to make the experience truly epic.

Guns of Icarus Online Adventure Mode will set the game in a “persistent post-apocalyptic steam and dieselpunk world,” divided into six unique player-controlled factions. Players will be able to enter and explore towns and take on automatically-generated missions to either help them develop and grow or drive them into ruin, and with players controlling the fate of each faction, the potential for political intrigue, driven by “robust and accessible economic and political systems,” is very high.

The team is building the game on four “pillars”: airship combat (which is already complete), the “AI Director” that will control all mission-based enemies, the economic and political systems, and world-building tools. The Kickstarter goal of $100,000 will pay for the development of the second pillar, the AI Director, while the final two pillars will be created as funding allows. Other “stretch goals” include walkable towns and free-flight and exploration modes.

Guns of Icarus Online doesn’t have the most stellar reviews ever but the idea is fantastic, and a faction-based persistent world could be just what’s needed to bring it to life. The Kickstarter, which is well over half-way to goal, runs until May 21.
