Kickstarter Picks: Always Outnumbered
SRRN studios are one of the most ambitious indie developers we’ve ever seen. They’re expanding so quickly, we’re not sure how much longer we’ll be able to call them indie! After their popular award-winning series Ash got enough interest to get funding from Konami for Ash II: Shadows, they’re already geared up for another huge project: the first competitive multiplayer tower defense game.

The project, titled Always Outnumbered, centers around the story of Casey – a girl raised in the destroyed wastelands of a machine-ruled land. It’s a story of a single girl trying to fight back against incredible odds. Armed with plenty of machine turrets of her own, Always Outnumbered hopes to bring out the best in robotic warfare.
In addition to a good story, however, SRRN is very passionate about making a completely competitive multiplayer scene. Because of this, they’ve been working hand-in-hand with GO Gaming in order to create a game balanced enough to support tournaments with hundreds of gamers.
The battles will determine who is the stronger of two factions: the offensive, or the defensive. You’ve played tower defense before against waves of AI—but how about waves of humans? Both waves and towers will be customizable from the ground-up over the course of each game, leading for some incredibly deep tower defense battles.

The only problem for SRRN and GO is the tedious process of delicately balancing each side to make things truly competitive. They need alpha and beta testers constantly working with the game in order to ensure its balance, and they need as much help as they can get to ensure quality. In order to have the best Always Outnumbered launch tournament ever, they’re looking to get half of their total funding in time for PAX Prime.
How much are they asking for? $175,000. It seems steep, but they’ve attempted to break it down to explain what they’re looking to spend. After fees and PAX setup costs, they’re looking for $140,000 to cover the game: $70,000 for development, $50,000 for art, and $20,000 for integrated community and marketing management alongside backer forums. It’s a big request, but like we’ve said, SRRN is a pretty bold indie company.

By donating $15, you’ll get the full game, digital art book, and access to the game’s closed beta. Not a bad deal at all! Got a friend that’s interested? $22 gets you two copies of the game, while $50 gets you four copies of the game, beta access, and soundtrack. The sky’s the limit for larger rewards, including parties, meet ups, and hand-painted custom figurines.
If you’re looking to be a part of one of the first competitive tower defense games around, give Always Outnumbered a look. They’ve still got a long way to fund, but they’re all about getting things done against the odds, aren’t they?
