Ok iOS gamers – here we go! It’s been a while since you’ve had a fresh look/feel on your favorite pocket device, and today’s release of iOS 8 should more than do the trick. You can access it now by going to Settings>General>Software Update.

Once the download kicks off, prepare to wait a while. About 10 minutes ago I started my download, and it said I’d have a 41 minute wait. Now, it says 46. WHY IS IT COUNTING UP?!?!

Methinks I’d better plug my iPhone in.

So what will iOS 8 bring gamers, other than a hefty, slow download on launch day? Metal.

Metal isn’t something you’re going to notice directly – at least not right away. Metal is Apple’s technology that will allow developers to really up the graphics performance of their games (so long as you’re running the A7 chip or better, so… the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6/6 Plus). And it’s not necessarily some crazy future tech, either. You’ll be able to see the impact right away, as games like Asphalt 8 and Plunder Pirates (launching tomorrow) have already been updated to support it.

What are you waiting for? If you want your day one iOS 8 update, you’re going to have to fight Father Time for it. Get in there and start that download.
