Halloween is nearly upon us and all the ghouls and monsters and devils are supposed to be out. Well, one particular devil, or at least half-a-devil is getting a new outing tomorrow, and we’ve not even hit All Hallow’s Eve yet. Hellboy Web Of Wyrd releases tomorrow on PC.
The game is an adaptation of the iconic comic book series Mike Mignola about the heroic human-demon hybrid who sets out to combat evil, in spite of.. well the horns and the tail and the red skin.
Fans of the comics will be excited to find out that Web Of Wyrd does a great job of emulating the style of the original comics, with the world rendered in shaders that emulate the deep cel-shaded shadows of the original world. It looks remarkably faithful to the source material.
The game itself is an action roguelike that spans several different stories starring our favorite Cambion. All of these revolve around the mysterious Butterfly House. The house is a structure that seems to defy conventional physics, and, as it happens, acts as a gateway to other worlds.
It’s up to you, as the half-demon hero himself, to descend into the surreal other planes of The Wyrd and thwart the plans of cosmic entities. You do this by beating the ever-loving snot out of them, naturally.
The game is very much an action title. You chain together combo hits, dodge, and parry. Learning the patterns of the various supernatural monsters you are facing is key to success.
The stories are new additions to the Hellboy canon, created in collaboration with Dark Horse Comics and creator Mike Mignola. Hopefully, we’ll get some worthy additions to the universe.
