Greenlight Spotlight: Path to the Sky

Steam’s Greenlight service can be a scary place to navigate. Sometimes there’s a bounty of amazing games to peruse, and other times finding the gold can require a whole lot of sifting. In my most recent search, I uncovered a gem I’m pretty excited about. It’s called Path to the Sky, and it’s a retro-inspired platformer with an emphasis on mystery.

Old school platformers are everywhere these days, I know. But few of them have as beautiful an aesthetic Path to the Sky, which looks something like a hybrid between Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP and Fez, both of which are gorgeous games in their own right. And because much of the game takes place on islands in the sky, you’re constantly treated to delightful backdrops, replete with moving clouds and vibrant colors. The below video does a pretty good job of showing off the game’s style:

But as relaxing as the visuals may be, it doesn’t seem like the kind of game that wants to make the player feel at peace. There are a lot of jumping puzzles in the development videos, although it’s unclear if enemies will show up in the final release. The description on Steam Greenlight promises “monsters,” though, so there’s certainly a good chance of it. And besides, everyone knows that sky islands are teeming with villainous characters.

Ultimately, Path to the Skyis a game about discovery. You’re traveling island to island to learn more about the ancient relic of the sky, and to attain its knowledge and power. It will no doubt be a strenuous journey, but developer Dek promises to provide players with the tools they need to survive—namely, concise controls. Speaking from experience, there’s nothing worse than a jump-heavy game with shoddy controls.

The game is in the early stages of development, and videos of its progress are released weekly here. Plenty could change between now and its release, but I’m personally enchanted by what’s been shown so far, and I’m anxious to get my hands on the final product. Should you feel the same:
