Greenlight Spotlight: Derrick the Deathfin

In most cases, paper and water are two things that don’t mix very well. Just ask that notebook I dropped in a puddle last year, which wound up washing away some of my best short stories. It’s just a law of nature that most paper products you submerge underwater tend to get a bit… soggy at best.

In most cases, paper and water are two things that don’t mix very well. Just ask that notebook I dropped in a puddle last year, which wound up washing away some of my best short stories. It’s just a law of nature that most paper products you submerge underwater tend to get a bit… soggy at best.

Well, that is until Derrick the Deathfin came along. Derrick is a feisty paper shark who just swam his way from the PlayStation Network over to PC and Mac platforms, and is looking to take a fresh new bite out of Steam in the next batch of potential Greenlight titles. He’s also too tough to abide by laws of nature. Chomp!

Derrick the Deathfin is a new action adventure that prides itself on being “the world’s first underwater paper craft game.” And it’s true; everything you see in the game has been handcrafted out of paper and other card materials, and handcrafted wonderfully at that. With 32 organic levels set across 11 unique environments, and epic boss battles that test your swimming and death-bringing abilities, Derrick the Deathfin has some of the coolest visual designs and character animations that I’ve ever seen in a video game.

The game features a sprightly cast of aquatic creatures you’ll meet across your adventure, and by “meet,” I mean “rip to shreds with your razor-sharp teeth.” You see, Derrick is avenging the untimely death of his parents, and there is no one under the sea who is safe from his carnage: not the crabs, not the little sea turtles, and not even the whales. But I think my favorite character of all in the Derrick the Deathfin universe would have to be the hip-hop pink frosted donut with the “EZY” gold chain that hangs around its neck. Yeah, I don’t know either, but it sure is awesome.

Derrick the Deathfin‘s fast-paced underwater gameplay is not only a perfect fit for the Steam community, but its incredible visuals let the game stand amongst the other indie greats as a true gaming work of art. If you don’t mind getting your feet wet, then you can swim your way on over to cast your vote for Derrick the Deathfin on the game’s Steam Greenlight page. And I suggest you do it soon, before Derrick starts to get hungry again.
