Classic games site Good Old Games (GOG.com) has apparently had to shut down. A message on the website says: “We have recently had to give serious thought to whether we could really keep GOG.com the way it is. We’ve debated on it for quite some time and, unfortunately, we’ve decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form.”

The company Tweeted moments ago that the official statement from GOG’s management about the situation will be “announced soon.” The company also said that people who had bought games through the service would be able to redownload them.
Launched in 2008, GOG.com dedicated itself to reviving old PC classics to work on newer machines and selling them as digital downloads for very reasonable prices. GOG prided itself on its DRM-free philosophy, but it looks like that might be at the heart of the site’s recent abrupt closure. Friday morning the company Tweeted: “Sometimes it’s really hard being DRM-free… hard to keep things the way they are and keep management and publishers happy :(“
