GigaOm has an interesting article about how a generation of people who grew up playing games are applying the techniques they learned from gaming (such as competition, competition, earning rewards and “experience points,” and “leveling up” by completing tasks) into school classrooms and even the workforce.

At Indiana University, for example, one teacher has begun grading two of his game design classes using an “experience points” system that awards XP to students for completing “quests” (giving presentations) and “crafting (doing exams and quizzes).

Another example the article gave was that of the online user-run encyclopedia Wikipedia, where anyone can post and edit articles, but those who invest the most time may “level up” to become senior editors with more responsibilities and editing privileges.
