Gamezebo Cribs: Gamezebo edition, part one

During our two-week adventure known as Gamezebo Cribs. we’ve shown you inside the offices of eight different leaders in the realm of casual gaming. And now that you’ve seen where some of your favorite games are made, it’s time to see where your favorite gaming site gets made. That’s right, today we’re heading into the offices of Gamezebo itself. In fact, since our crack editorial team works remotely in home offices across North America, we’ll be splitting this edition in to two. Today, we’re checking out where our mobile games editor Jim Squires gets his work done, as well as our social and online games editor, Andrew Webster (that’s me!).

“This is where I spend most of my day, tapping away at the keyboard making sure Gamezebo stays full of exciting new content. The great thing about that chair is that not only is it comfortable, it also serves as an excellent scratching post for my cats.”

“A closer look at the shelf above my desk. In addition to the two lovely art prints by Army of Trolls and Scott C (which desperately need to be framed, I know), there’s also a number of very mature toys covering everything from Shaun of the Dead to Run DMC. Plus, there’s a number of books on writing, books on games, and, of course, actual games.”

“This is the newest addition to the family, four month old Molly. She may look cute, but you should see her when it’s dinner time.”

“Without a doubt the most important shelf in the house. Here I make a type of liquid fuel called ‘coffee’ that helps power the work I do at Gamezebo. Without it I’d probably be sleeping at my desk right now.”

“Sometimes, you just need to get out of the house. So it’s a good thing there’ s not one, not two, but three coffee shops within a two minute walking distance from my place.”

Jim Squires, mobile games editor

news

“Here’s where the magic happens, folks! Every word written, article edited, and email replied to that relates to mobile games happens right here in the heart of the command center. As you can see, a room like this is what happens when a 10 year old boy grows up to be a 30 year old man with a bank account. Nerdery adorns just about every wall in my house, and my office is no exception. Besides — if you’re going to have a workspace, why shouldn’t it be fun? You may also notice the corner of my bed in at the bottom left of the photo. That’s right — my office is so cool that it has it’s own king size mattress! That, or my office is in my bedroom. I forget which.”

“It may come as a bit of a surprise to you, but being a mobile games editor doesn’t mean I just play mobile games. To really keep my finger on the pulse, I need to dabble in a little bit of everything that happens in the industry. In the first picture you’ll see the entertainment center where most of my non-mobile and non-PC video gaming happens. In the second, you’ll see what I do during my downtime… play more games! 2011 rather quickly became the year in which I embraced board gaming, and there’s many a night I finally walk away from my desk to sit in the living room with my wife and do a little gaming ‘unplugged.'”

“The best part about being a mobile games editor is that it’s mobile. Sure I need to be tied to my desk most days of the week, but if I’m knee deep in reviewing the latest iPhone or iPad game, there’s a very good chance you’ll find me out and about on a park bench. These two are personal favorites of mine — one in a local park (one that was designed by Central Park designer Frederick Law Olmstead no less!), and one that sits atop a lengthy pier, jutting out into Lake Ontario. With fall already here and winter fast approaching, though, I’ll soon be looking for an indoor alternative to my ‘work in the park’ approach.”

Stay tuned for part two tomorrow, when we take a look at the officies of our PC and Mac downloads editor Erin Bell and Gamezebo founder Joel Brodie.
