Game for Charity has launched an online game tournament to raise money to help fight multiple sclerosis. To participate in the Play for Cure event, players make a $15 tax-deductable donation which allows them to play the online game Lightning Bugs for the chance to win $5,000 in prizes.
Game for Charity has launched an online game tournament to raise money to help fight multiple sclerosis. To participate in the Play for Cure event, players make a $15 tax-deductable donation which allows them to play the online game Lightning Bugs for the chance to win $5,000 in prizes.
The tournament was conceived by Atlanta, Georgia-based game developer Rezilio and the MS Society Georgia Chapter. Unlike other fundraising initiatives, more than 80 percent of donations received through Play for Cure go straight to the charity.
“Game For Charity radically changes the way charitable organizations can leverage the internet to raise funds”, said Roy Rangel, president of the National MS Society’s Georgia Chapter, in a press release. “Typically by the time a charity hosts a fundraiser, such as a golf tournament, it costs 85 cents per every dollar donated, whereas, Game for Charity and an online game tournament only costs 20 cents per dollar, allowing 80 percent of the donation to go directly to the charity.”
The goal is to raise $50,000 by December 28, 2007.
