FarmVille farmers looking to purchase in-game currency now have a new option when it comes to spending their hard-earned cash. Previously requiring either a credit card or PayPal account, Farm Cash and Farm Coins can now be purchased using Facebook’s own virtual currency Facebook Credits.
While it’s not the first game to make use of Facebook Credits, Farmville will certainly be the biggest. With more than 83 million users, the game remains larger than any other Facebook application – it’s even bigger than the popular social client Twitter.
The company stands to earn a hefty payday should the Facebook Credits service catch on. It was recently revealed that Facebook will take 30% of the revenue generated by Facebook credits – the same amount that Apple takes from the sales of applications on the iTunes App Store.
The system has seen adoption in a number of high profile Facebook games lately, most notably in Crowdstar releases like Happy Island, Happy Aquarium and Happy Pets which use Facebook Credits as their sole option for in-game purchases. Despite this early success, Facebook Credits still have a long way to go before they become the go-to option for the vast majority of Facebook shoppers. Gaining this much exposure from the platform’s leading app should definitely do the fledgling service good.
