Double Fine’s The Cave gets a release date

If you’re an adventure game enthusiast and/or fan of sentient caves, there’s a good chance you’ve been anxiously awaiting a release date for Double Fine’s The Cave. Well, stop with the anxiousness! It’s starting to stress me out, and besides, publisher Sega has just announced that the game will be making its way to PS3 and Wii U on January 22, followed by Steam and Xbox 360 on January 23.

For those unfamiliar with The Cave, it’s a 2D platformer/adventure game from Maniac Mansion and The Secret of Monkey Island co-creator Ron Gilbert. It tells the story of a magical cave, and the seven people who go to it in the hopes of learning something about themselves. You enter the cave with three characters of your choosing, and the outcome of the game is based heavily on who you select. Each character has unique areas within the cave dedicated to them, and they each have certain platforming abilities that grant them access to locations that others can’t reach.

Oh, and there are puzzles. Lots and lots of puzzles.

Gilbert has stated in the past that the idea for the game came to him around the time of Maniac Mansion (which released in 1987), so I suppose you could argue it’s been 25 years in the making. Either way, it’s shaping up to be an exciting release for adventure fans both old and new.
