The Kickstarter for Tim Schafer’s Double Fine Adventure project has concluded, and it’s a resounding success. The final tally: $3,335,265 from 87, 138 backers.
“It’s been an amazing experience,” Tim Schafer said as the Kickstarter drew to its close on Wednesday. “So much love.”
When Schafer kicked off the fundraiser last month, he had hoped to raise $400,000 to fund the development of a point-and-click adventure game. Some of Schafer’s previous works include classics like The Secret of Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle, and fans seemingly have not forgotten how much fun they had playing them.
“I don’t want to say this is the end of the whole game industry as we know it … it’s not, it’s not!” Schafer said jokingly as the Kickstarter clock counted down. However, Schafer did acknowledge that the success of the Double Fine fundraiser proves that there’s definitely still a place for niche titles in the current market. “You can choose,” he said.
This definitely sets an interesting precedent for niche game developers. Suddenly, it’s very possible for industry veterans to take some time for themselves and work on something that they truly love. Of course, not everyone is Tim Schafer, who has proven time and time again that he’s more than capable of developing an adventure worth playing. The public is not going to open its wallet every time someone in a garage says, “Hey, I have a great idea for a game!” It’s just good to know that the alternative is there.
