Ever wondered what a game where dinosaurs wield swords in their mouth like Grey Wolf Sif from Dark Souls would look like? Well apparently someone who did wonder this was Jean Nyugen, Senior Gameplay Animator at Sucker Punch and the result is DinoBlade, a personal project prototype where dinosaurs get into sword fights.

No Pun Title? We’re T-Wrecked

The most tragic news recently about the project is that Nguyen cannot use the title DinoSword because it’s already taken. This provoked the name change from previous iterations to the current working title, DinoBlade.

Still, this lost opportunity for a pun has not stopped the development of the game, as we recently saw a demonstration video showing combat in action.

The combat is, according to the tweet, built on the Combat Fury system, an Unreal Engine system that simplifies the implementation of combat mechanics into a game, pretty handy if you’re working on a personal project!

From Animations To Working Gameplay

So where did this idea come from? The first dinos wielding weapons showed up in videos on Jean’s Twitter account over a year ago, with a spinosaurus tossing a blade around. It’s the kind of thing a talented animator might do for a bit of fun, but things soon got more ambitious. First, we had dinosaurs cosplaying as video game characters, but soon the idea had evolved into a game, where you could control a heavily-armed carnivore in a prehistoric-medieval mashup death battle.

It’s hard to think of anything we would like to hit a public release more than this right now.
