CivWorld closing on May 29

History is dotted with civilizations that built themselves up and then crumbled over centuries. Even civilizations born online thrive for a time and then go bust, though it tends to happen over the course of a couple of years instead of a few hundred. Example: Inside Social Games is reporting that CivWorld, the Facebook adaptation of Sid Meyer’s massively popular Civilization sim series, will be closing on May 29, 2013.

The announcement was made earlier via a grim statement on the game’s Facebook page:

“Rulers of great civilizations, repent! The world is coming to an end! CivWorld will shortly cease operations and flow into the ethers, forever a fond memory of great triumphs. The last day for players to get more CivBucks using Facebook Credits will be April 2nd, 2013. The last day CivWorld will be accessible is May 29th, 2013. We thank you for the time you spent with CivWorld, and beseech you to stay civilized on the other side.”

CivWorld launched in May of 2011, and it peaked in July of that year with 88,754 daily active users. However, the numbers plummeted quickly: The game had about 5,000 daily active users by July 2012, and according to App Data, only about 2000 people are currently playing it on a regular basis.

If you’re a CivWorld player, better pack up your history of peace-making and warfare before the cosmic landlord locks you out for good.
