Do you know the story of Bonnie and Clyde? Well, not the movie. These are a capybara duo that escaped from Toronto’s High Park Zoo in May 2016. They roamed the zoo’s forests and ponds for 19 days before eventually being captured. Now, their story is what inspired Capy Castaway.

Coming to Steam on August 6th, Capy Castaway is a cosy, family-friendly, narrative-driven adventure. Kitten Cup Studio is the developer, the Canadian indie team behind the 2023 cat-themed tea-making simulator Pekoe.

Published by Big Blue Sky Games, the release date announcement comes with a new, ridiculously wholesome trailer. We see a young capybara fan doing the voiceover while showing off a bunch of the game’s activities. Watch it here!

Capy Castaway follows a young capybara pup named Capy and a talkative crow named Corvi after a flood separates them from home. The two end up on a mysterious island and have to work together to get back.

The island is a whimsical place where lost things gather after the flood. As Capy and Corvi explore, they meet other stranded animals, help fellow castaways, uncover the island’s hidden story, and slowly figure out what home really means.

Capy and Corvi each have their own abilities, which help you solve puzzles. Capy can sniff things out, dig, swim, and turn pretty much anything into a hat. Corvi, meanwhile, can fly around, grab items that Capy can’t reach, fetch objects, and even carry Capy across gaps.

You’ll run through muddy paths, discover fairy rings, play fetch, collect trinkets, solve puzzles, and just poke at everything. Throughout the story, you’ll make decisions that shape the adventure and can lead to multiple endings.

Capy Castaway is charming

You can play the whole adventure solo by controlling both Capy and Corvi yourself, or bring another player along in co-op. It supports local co-op, and Steam Remote Play Together is available, too. When Capy Castaway arrives on August 6th, it’ll launch on Steam for $17.99 (a 10% discount on its regular price).
