2020’s hit Call of the Sea now has a sequel, which just dropped on multiple platforms today. It’s Call of the Elder Gods, and it brings a creepy cosmic horror angle this time around. It’s developed by Out of the Blue Games and published by Kwalee.

Part of the Calls from Beyond franchise, Call of the Elder Gods is now available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, and Xbox Series X/S. It costs $24.99, but is currently up for grabs at 20% off ($19.99) across platforms.

The game is inspired by The Shadow Out of Time by H. P. Lovecraft. You get the grief, family, sanity, and forbidden knowledge. There’s also fully voice-acted storytelling, with Yuri Lowenthal returning, who people probably know from Marvel’s Spider-Man, Arcane, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Alongside him is Cissy Jones, whose credits include Firewatch, Starfield, and Baldur’s Gate III.

So, what’s happening in Call of the Elder Gods?

Things are going very wrong at Miskatonic University. Professor Harry Everhart keeps seeing shadows moving around in the corners of his vision. Meanwhile, student Evangeline Drayton is dealing with recurring dreams of some artefact that was uncovered ten years earlier.

So, the two decide to investigate instead of running away from the eldritch nightmare situation. And they end up uncovering stuff way older and more horrifying than expected.

The object and observation-based puzzle design from the first game is there in Call of the Elder Gods. You’ll dig around environments for clues and swap between Harry and Evangeline to solve the multi-part puzzles that stretch across time and space.

The notebook system from the first game also returns. It automatically tracks important clues, which helps separate actual puzzle information from random bits and details.
