Popcap has announced that the mobile version of its hit match-3 series Bejeweled is getting split into two. Bejeweled 2 + Blitz is being “retired” and will be replaced by a freemium version of Blitz and a brand-new, hi-res version of Bejeweled.

The new game, titled simply Bejeweled, will feature a trio of familiar modes, including zen, diamond mine, and classic. It also features retina display-optimized visuals and in-game leaderboards. Popcap says that players can expect to see a number of updates to the game in the future, as well.

The mobile version of Bejeweled Blitz, meanwhile, will become Popcap’s first ever mobile freemium game. As with the Facebook version of Bejeweled Blitz, iOS users can expect gameplay that’s boiled down to 60 second-long bursts of match-3 action. Blitz, too, will feature retina visuals and will also include full Facebook integration, according to Popcap.

“As we strive to reach virtually everyone with a mobile communications device, PopCap will continue to make games that are even more accessible to that ever-expanding global audience,” said Giordano Bruno Contestabile, the Bejeweled franchise business director. “We’re taking a critical step toward this goal with the introduction of these new Bejeweled titles that will enhance our offerings on the iPhone for years to come.”

Both games are expected to be available in the App Store later today.
